I would like to say thank you to Ms. Cassandra for all her support and information the provided within these ten weeks. I learned new information about At Risk Children and Families. I gained new information and I also gained new knowledge about At Risk Children and Families. I learned from Ms. Cassandra that young parents are in need of help and support in regards to different programs that can help them better themselves. These young parents are in need of programs such as computer training, GED programs, Agencies with childcare, and job trainings.
I followed up on all of Ms. Cassandra blog journals and through her post I had the opportunity to learn more about children at risk and families. This topic opened my eyes because I never thought about this topic and it is so important; because our young generation are having babies so young that children are at risk. I want to thank Ms. Cassandra for giving me the opportunity and realize that having children at a young age can be critical for our young generation. I can see Ms. Cassandra has been working with this issue becasue she provided different ideas on how to help these young mothers. Ms. Cassandra I would like to thank you for all your support. Good Luck.

Journal Blog 5: A Note of Thanks and Support
I would like to say thank you to Ms. Victoria for all her support and great information she provided within these ten weeks. I leaned great information from her blog journals and I gained new knowledge about play and the arts. I am positive that Ms. Victoria will be a great candidate for any teaching position because of her commitment to what she believes. Ms. Victoria I would like to take this time to say that the play and the art's is vital for children because they learn so much from these two skills. Children develop physical skills as they learn to reach, grasp, run, climb, and balance. Children also develop cognitive concepts they learn to solve problems. For example what does this do? Does this puzzle piece fits here? Children learn colors, numbers, size, and shapes. Children have the ability to enhance their memory skills as their attention span grows. Children develop language skills though play; by playing and interacting with other children. They retell stories by pretend play and children also develop other social skills thorough play. They learn to negotiate, take turns, and play by the rules.
Ms. Victoria It has been a please getting to know you; I wish you the best in the future. Good Luck.

Blog 4: Enlisting and Providing Support
The resources and information I am seeking are questions related to about childhood obesity. Are you implementing ways to reduce childhood obesity in the classroom or in the weekly lesson plan? Do you have accurate websites that I can review? What strategies would you use to help families understand that childhood obesity is a health problem? Do you know any city or countries that are implementing a plan about childhood obesity in school?
The resources I have fond helpful and insightful about my advocacy plan are the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The reason I believe these two resources are helpful for my advocacy plan is because these organizations believe in making a difference in early childhood education. The Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) is an organization that is a nationally recognized childhood obesity prevention program. The mission of this program is to confront the childhood obesity epidemic by promoting healthy and active lifestyles for children throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Since 2002 the consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children has built a vital, broad-based of thousands of participants and organizations. They have over 3,000 participants and they are representing over 1,200 organizations.
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is a part of the Smart School Snack a Comprehensive Preschool Education program. The Smart School Snack was design to inform early childhood teachers, children, and families about the foundation of healthy eating. The Smart School Snack learning environment includes establishing healthy independent eating habits, hand washing, appropriate food portion, social eating skills, self-monitoring and self-skill. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) also follows the NAEYC Chicago -Nutritionized Lesson Plan which is the menu for the early childhood education. The menu includes breakfast, lunch, and snack. Each meal is measure according to the child age.

My Personal Advocacy Journey
The quote that I find inspirational reading the role that advocacy can be in
the lives of young children and their family is “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion
against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do
this, it would change the earth.” By Williams Faulkner, I find this inspirational in regards to family
members.
that inspires an excites me most about my advocacy plan and being an advocate is that the families from Onward House will learn new knowledge and learn new information about childhood obesity. Knowing the struggle of childhood obesity I felt that it was a great reason to choose this topic because I think this is an important topic for families, staff, and the community to learn about. What excites me about being an advocate is that I know I can make a difference in family's lives and with my effort we can work together and try to love a healthier life. Sometimes families just need encouragement and information from someone else that cares about their well-being in order to make changes.
The challenges and anxieties I feel related to engaging in the advocacy effort I have targeted is that I am aware that my topic might be strong for many families. I feel I need to be sensitive on how I persuaded my audience because I don't want them to feel I am attacking them or feel they are doing something wrong. I would work hard to convince the audience to give though and to consider my advocacy effort. I would provide evidence about my topic and I will also have all my research available and explain why my advocacy plan is important to live a healthier life.
I believe that most effective part in helping me overcome any challenged emotions I may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing my advocacy action plan is by being able to communicate and have the ability to express myself clearly in both oral and writing form. These two skills are vital to convince my audience that my topic is important and it is important to learn about the effects of childhood obesity.
I think I can encourage others in their advocacy effort, by reminding them to keep in mind that it is important to provide updated research and evidence about the topic. I also think it is important to ask questions about the topic to the audience because it is important for families to provide feedback. I think it is vital to know that the audience has and understanding about the topic. I can also encourage others in their advocacy to gather information and assemble it into a format that will inform the reader with evidence based materials established through numerous studies. Others can encourage me by providing constructive criticism because I think this would help me prepare myself for the real world.

Module 5: Blog Journal
A Note of Thanks and Support
I would like to say thank you to Ms. Kelly for all her support and information
she provided during these 10 weeks. I've learned and gained new knowledge about
Special Education and I wish you the best in your education. This topic is and
important topic for families, professionals, teachers, and other people within
the field. Knowing facts about special education is always great to know. It is
to people advantage to gain knowledge because they can understand facts better.
I had the pleasure to read and follow your blog journals.
It was an honor to read your blog journals because I'm a firm believer about providing quality not quantity, especially because teachers are always busy running around and teaching children academic skills they need to learn prior to moving up to the next level. Finding the time to teach each individual child is a challenge but not impossible. Many of us chose this field because we love teaching young children but to me the most important thing is to find that special time to help each child's individual needs. If I can do this I know I'm doing my job, which is to help children succeeded in their education.
Ms. Kelly, I wish you the best in your professional path and in the future. Thank you for all your support, hard work, and dedication. GOOD LUCK

Blog Journal Module: 4
During this module I had the opportunity to interact with different colleagues and professionals within the field. I poke with a teacher who has her Master's in Education. Ms. T.W. teaches 3 to 5 years old. I had the opportunity to ask her questions in regards to the field and about childhood obesity. Ms. T.W. believes children who are overweight or obese are that way because families don't realizable that being overweight or obese is very dangerous for children health. Ms. T.W. believes that professionals can support families to learn about childhood obesity by encouraging parents to volunteer in the classroom. She believes parents should participate in the classroom not only observe but to participate in preparing nutritious meals with their children. Ms. T.W. believes teachers can do activities relating to the food pyramid and read or ask parent to read books relating to healthy nutrition.
Ms. T.W. strongly believes professionals need to know how to approach parents about childhood obesity. Parents might think they are being attacked and they might feel they are bad role models. She said that "the key is to be discreet" because some professionals are not sensitive or the way they talk to parents or children about their weight or eating habits. Ms.T.W. said it is important to allow children to participate in activities that interest them, even though children that are obese find it difficult to run and climb. If they would just do some sort of activity for one hour 3 to 4 days a week they would have less chances to become obese. It is important to let children be themselves don't push them to do activities that might hurt them, but continue to encourage them to participate but follow their lead.
After talking to colleagues and other professionals within the field I learned that it is important to involve parent in the classroom. I learned different strategies to involve parents in the classroom such as sending a letter home inviting parents to participate in our weekly Food Experience and sending home a letter about the activities children do during the week. I also learned that classroom participation is critical for parent. If you don't know what is going on in your child's classroom than you know your child. After talking to different professionals and other teachers I gained knowledge on how to incorporate different activities and invite parents to participate in the classroom.
The insights I gained from observing, interacting with professionals, teachers, and families is that teachers can develop relationships with parent and other professionals to work as team. By developing a relationship with parent allow teachers to help children in a productive manner. Another insight I gained from observing and interacting with different professionals within the field is that parents can be part of teaching their children about childhood obesity by reading books, cooking home cooked meals, and by keeping them active with physical sports.

Blog Journal Module: 3
The last two weeks I had the opportunity to interact with colleague's site director, and other professionals in the field. I had the opportunity to talk to the site director Ms. Rivera and asked questions about her thoughts on addressing advocacy issues. Ms. Rivera informed me that as a director she encourages the staff to build healthy eating into lessons and provide workshops regarding obesity. Ms. Rivera also takes it upon herself to write letters. She also encourages families and reminds them during monthly meetings the importance of eating health foods. Ms. Rivera said that as a director she might find out more about becoming involved with current advocacy programs by keeping up with information within the community especially with libraries, summer program, and by findings information on different websites. As the site director my goal is and my mission statement is to influence families to make changes with their life styles.
I also had the opportunity to talk to different professionals within the field. I spoke with Ms. Crystal who is the Health Aid. Ms. Crystal is in charge of checking all the files and provides support to all the family support workers. Ms. Crystal informed me that one of the ways she addresses advocacy issues with professionals in her setting is by; talking to parents and families about the importance of having three meals daily and adding fruits and vegetables in meals. Ms. Crystal believes some of the current issues are due to the fact that many families don't have enough time to cook a healthy meal. Many families in Head Start Programs are single families which work full time. I believe I might find out more about current advocacy programs, and stay in contact with the families I work with to provide new information in regards to Head Start Programs. The kind of differences I would like to make in my setting, community, and field; I would like to see more fresh food markets within my neighborhood and see children being more active. I would like to see children exercise every day at least one hour a day. I would like to see an increase in regards to eating healthy. Three servings of low fat dairy a day, and two hours of less screen time would show improvement in a healthy lifestyle. Families can also increase water, vegetables, and fruit intake in their meals by preparing more home cooked meals.
This experience gave me the opportunity to see and hear what other professionals think about addressing advocacy issues and how everyone has different views of implementing advocacy within their settings. This experience made me realized that it is important to advocate for the things we do in life, and to help our children around the world.

Blog Journal Module: 2
Within these two weeks i had the opportunity to interact with professionals and colleagues. I visited Ms. Kristin's classroom, she is the lead teacher in the two year old classroom. I observed her classroom from 8:30 to 10:30 A.M. I had the opportunity to see how she interacts with the families and the children when they first arrived in the classroom. I observed how the children eat breakfast. I noticed that the children served themselves with teacher's help; they served two serving spoons. The children are allowed to have seconds if they eat all the food on their plate and the fruit. Children are allowed to serve only one serving spoon the second time.
I also observed the children playing in the classroom. Ms. Kristin's classroom is child initiated. When the children ply the teachers observe them and they expand on their creativity and curiosity. When I observed Ms. Kristin's classroom I noticed a child who had a hard time playing with his peers. This particular child wanted to play with everything everyone else was playing with. When Ms. Kristin saw specific child having difficulties playing with his peers she went and added toys and water in the water table. When the child saw she added water in the table he went and took a smack; put the smack on and started to play with the water.
The special learning experience related to my topic was breakfast. I learned that teachers are aware of children's weight and they tried to monitor what children eat. When I informed Ms. Kristin about my research topic she was not surprise. She said that childhood obesity is an important topic for families, because many children are overweight and obese. Ms. Kristin informed me that the reason they monitor children when eat is because the center followed a plan to monitor children's weight. Every three moths the children are weighted and if the child is overweight or under weight the family support worker; follows up with families to see if the child has any additional needs.
The second person I had the opportunity to observed and spend time with is the family support worker. Ms. Jessica is the family support worker for the two year old classroom. I had the opportunity to observe and see how she would input children data or information in COPA. Ms. Jessica explained that physicals, dental, immunizations, TB, Hearing & Vision, ASQ, Family partnership Agreement, Family assessments, and Case Notes regarding family and child are documents that go in COPA. Ms. Jessica is also responsible for scheduling meetings with the mental health provider. Ms. Jessica has many other duties, such as Scheduling SRT meetings, weighing children every three months, and accompanying teachers when visiting families homes.
Ms. Jessica provided great information regarding my topic. She informed me that she has to develop a plan for children who are overweight every three months. Ms. Jessica also follows up with Body Max Index (BMI). This is the weight plan. If the Body Max Index (BMI) is above 18% the child is overweight and the child is at risk of diabetes. If the BMI is under 18% the child is where he/she needs to be. She is responsible for making any adjustments and encouraging family to attend family's monthly meetings. In some of these meetings she arranges meetings with the nutritionist to to discuss information about home cooked meals and the importance of teaching children to eat all type of foods, such as eating vegetables and fresh fruits.

Blog #1 EDU - 411 Luz E. Flores
Interviewing Two Professionals in Early Childhood Care and
Education
I interviewed two family support workers from Onward
House. Each family support worker has
their own field. The first person I interviewed is
the family support worker for the two year old's
and the second family support worker I interviewed
is the family support worker for three to five
year old's. I informed the two family support workers
that I am thinking of focusing my research
paper on Obesity and I would like to interview them
because I would like to know what are their
views and perspective towards Obesity in young
children.
The insights I gained from the interviews in regard
to Obesity was surprising because I
realized that many families are actually in denial.
The two family support workers informed me
that this is an issue with families because many
families don’t think their child is overweight.
They both said that this is an issue that they are
concerned with due to the fact that most of the
families that are enrolled in the program are single
parents and they work long hours. Both
family support workers are trying their best to
advocate towards this matter because the
percentage of overweight children in the program is
high. These two professionals are
concentrating on working with parents and are going
to start providing workshops in regard to
heath, and nutrition. They are focusing on weight
management plans, health, and nutrition
workshops as well. They informed me that the tool
they use is simple but consistent because they
weigh the children every three months. Both family
workers develop a plan to follow up the
child’s weight. This plan is to help families reduce
the quantity of food their children eat and also
reduce the juice, soda, and junk food intake.
The insights I gained from the interviews regarding
current advocacy efforts and needs in obesity
is that families feed their children what they want
to eat. Both family support workers are
advocating towards healthy foods in the program and
in the families homes. The program is no
longer serving juice, and the children are drinking
1% milk. The program is also working on
providing healthier snacks, such as more natural
fruits, and drinking more water. Another
insight I gained from my interviews in regard to my
area of interest is that the majority of the
children that are enrolled in the program are
overweight because families are providing fast food
and they eat big quantities.
These interviews influenced my decision about which
area of interest and topics to choose for
my research paper. I knew I wanted to do my research
paper on obesity because I worked with
children and I believe this is becoming an issue. The
children who are overweight don’t want to
do much, they just want to sit and play all day. I
personally have a child in my classroom that is
overweight and I have a hard time with him every day
especially when we go for our
neighborhood walks. This child just don’t want to
walk; he throws himself on the ground
refusing to walk.
The areas of interest I’m thinking of focusing are
the importance of eating healthy food, making
changes in the life style, which can be more
physical activities, and reduced recreational screen
time. The three specific topics I will focus on are
health consequences, diabetes, high blood
pressure, and asthma. I will focus on these specific
illnesses because they can be fatal. I believe
families need to know that children who are
overweight are in danger of these illnesses and they
need to start being responsible and make changes on
their lives styles. The reason I chose these
three topics is because many families think their
children are cute because they are overweight
and they think that if they are overweight they are
healthy. I strongly believe parent’s
need to be
educated on the importance of healthy eating, and
physical activities.
